The launching in Suriname was good. The press was well represented. There was a discussion with a representative from the media because of the issue on stereotyping. That person said that media is business and if it is a man who can give her the information she will still look up for the man. She said that there is nothing that she could do if there are not many female experts or ministers in government.

We had lots of interviews on radio and television and also online: www.starnieuws.com.

The presentation of the report to government representatives will happen tomorrow.

Regards,

Sandra Clenem

Dear Colleagues,

my congratulations to all with very good work made together!

The team from WACC, you are very great! I loved to work with you – Sarah, Gisele, Dermot and all persons included. The conversations with you always were very quick and fruitful. Really, it’s a pleasure to work in such kind of cooperation.

Yesterday we had the national Launch of GMMP in Tbilisi,  Georgia. Our journalists know about the Project because we spoke much about GMMP - now and in 2005. The interest is not only from media but from women’s organizations also. The GMMP results help them to think: how to make the media our friends and partners? The question is very important.

The Launch was organized together with national office of UNIFEM in Tbilisi – thanks to Tamuna Sabedashvili and her assistant Rusiko Tutberidze.

I have many photos from launch but can not put here. How to do it?

Warm regards,

Galina Petriashvili, national coordinator in Georgia

Miercuri 29 septembrie 2010 va avea loc la Centrul pentru Jurnalism Independent, Bd Regina Elisabeta nr 32 (cladirea FSLI) intre Piata Kogalniceanu si BD Schitu Magureanu, etaj 1, orele 12.30 lansarea rezultatelor proiectului WHO MAKES THE NEWS GLOBAL MEDIA MONITORING PROJECT Despre cine vorbesc stirile (sub egida WACC si UNIFEM).

GMMP National Report launching program in Nepal has just been completed. The Chairperson of National Women's Commission Ms. Nainakala Thapa released the National Report in a special program. The program was conducted form 11 am to 2 pm at Martin Chautari hall in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Around 60 participants, including journalists- media professionals- civil society members, took part in the program. The launching program was very exciting. After the report launch, the National Coordinator Ms. Manju Thapa presented the World Press Release and the findings of National monitoring, followed by interaction in the open floor. The floor raised many questions and answered by her. Most of the participants opined that the monitoring of news media should be longer than one day monitoring.

This is the first time that the National Report was formally launched though the report was printed and desseminated to media in 2005 also. In conclusion, the program was really exciting and provocative.

Another report lauching program, in Nepal, is going to be held in next city Ghorahibazar, Dang on 3 pm. Hope, that would also be exciting.

with regards, Manju Thapa

The GMMP global and national reports will be released in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore on 29 September, to coincide with the global launch.
• In Mumbai the NWMI is collaborating with the Press Club of Mumbai to organise the event (Press Club, 3 pm IST).
• In Delhi the NWMI and the Indian Women’s Press Corps are jointly organising the function (IWPC, 4 pm IST).
• In Bangalore the Centre for Development & Learning and the NWMI are holding the event together (Press Club, 1.30 pm IST).

This year, for the first time since India began participating in the five-yearly GMMP process in 1995, a national report has been produced to specifically present the results of GMMP monitoring in India. GMMP research in India, conducted by volunteers across the country, was coordinated by the Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI). The media monitored here include 20 dailies, 11 TV news bulletins, and 5 radio bulletins, together representing 9 languages. Some findings from analysis of data from India:

• Women constituted less than a quarter (22 per cent) of the people heard or read about in the news (i.e., as news subjects) across all topic categories in India.
• Only 22 per cent of the news subjects who were also sources of information (news sources) were women; 78 per cent of the news sources were men.
• Only 12% of the news stories had women as the central focus (i.e., focussed specifically on one or more women). That is marginally less than the global figure (13%).
• Only 5 per cent of the news stories highlighted gender equality or inequality, again marginally less than the global figure (6 per cent).
• Nearly two thirds (63 per cent) of the news stories reinforced gender stereotypes while only 9 per cent challenged them.

Thanks and regards, Ammu Joseph

Our 29 September presentation will take place at the UNIFEM office in Tbilisi, at 2pm by local time, in cooperation with UNIFEM staff and local activists. We have invited journalists (mostly), from all national media, especially from those monitored. We shall use the event to give more information about GMMP and why it's important for national media. We shall also hand over certificates. I believe that the national team of monitors is very good and one of the important results of GMMP. We need to continue the work together!”
